Mount Bromo is a great destination for those who would like to climb a volcano with their kid(s) in South-East Asia. It takes about 30 minutes to climb it, things couldn’t be better!
We landed the night before at Surabaya. A driver was waiting for us to drop us off at a guest house very close to the Bromo. It rained a lot and it easily took three hours to get there. We stayed at guest house Yoschi. It is rudimentary but clean.
We booked a jeep for the following morning – departure at 5am for the sunrise over Mt Bromo. It was cloudy and the sunrise looked like this… Mt Bromo is the volcano where the thick white smoke is coming from.
It was the first day of our Surabaya-Bromo-Kawah Ijen-Bali journey (5 days). Although we woke up very early, we were still feeling great!
We got back in the jeep and drove through a long layer of ashes. It is wonderful and looks completely surreal at the same time.
Once at the foot of Bromo, you can go up by riding a horse (apart from the 20 steps of the last leg). This can be very good option with older kids who are too heavy to be carried all the way to the top but not big enough to walk long distances.
A very low vertical drop… just enough to feel it.
The sound of a big pot boiling coming out of the crater… Impressive.
If you stay along the edges, you will not be affected by the smoke.
Just to give you an idea of the slope…

|Tips from Traveling with kids to Parents|
|Stroller or baby carrier?
||Considering the vertical drop and the soil (dirt track), it is impossible to take a stroller. The baby-carrier is by far the best option for this trip. Because we didn’t want to be overloaded, we had taken our soft structure carrier. However we did regret not taking our backpack baby carrier, way more comfortable for the back.|
|Baby/ Child age from?||18-24 months old|
|Health condition?||Bad. I am not even sure there is a good hospital in Surabaya, which is a 3-hour drive. You better be very careful (prevent baby from falling or breaking an arm!) and take your first-aid kit. Avoid going there with a baby who’s too young as s/he will have a hard time waking up so early and the jeep’s jolts on top of that.|
|Particular challenge(s)?||Carrying a kid can be tiring, even just for a 30-minute ascent, but you still have the horse option. Even if you refuse at the beginning, horse owners will climb up so there will always be someone along the way to take you up. Waking up at 4am followed by the jeep’s jolts for 30 minutes could put any kid in a bad mood. The trip really depends on your kid’s character, so your call!|
|Food?||Nothing close to Mt Bromo. Plan ahead before arriving.|
||We did the Singapore-Surabaya-Bromo-Kawah Ijen-Bali-Singapore journey in 5 days and it was very fast. Unless you have a kid who doesn’t mind spending long hours in transports and being waken up early several days in a row, I would advise you to extend your trip for a few days or to do it on two separate trips.FYI: it took us 7 hours on roads seriously damaged to get to Kawah Ijen from Bromo…|
